St. Bernadette parish has been blessed with faithful members who recognize that they have been commissioned as God's stewards and endowed by Him with many gifts and talents. We invite you to share your time and talent in the below ministries with others.
Lectors prepare readings prior to each Mass, then proclaim the first and second readings, lead the Prayers of the Faithful, and read any parish announcements at the beginning of mass. Training and a lector workbook with explanations of each text is provided. Open to practicing Catholics living a life style not contradictory to the church's teachings. Open to adult and youth (high school and older).
Ushers assist at weekend Liturgies as scheduled. They help greet and seat people, pass the collection baskets, distribute bulletins, direct the lines of people going to Holy Communion, assist in directing Eucharistic Ministers to people who are physically unable to come to the front of church to receive. Ushers are also needed at special Liturgies (First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Holy Days of Obligation). Open to men and women age 14 or older.
Altar Servers are open to teenagers and children beginning in 4th grade. Altar Serves in grades 6th - 8th serve at the weekday liturgies. All Altar Servers serve at weekend liturgies. Experienced Altar Servers are invited to serve wedding liturgies. All servers will be trained for funerals. Servers arrive 20 minutes prior to the liturgy they are serving, dress in an alb and cincture, check in with the presider and sacristan, and help set up for Mass. Training for new servers will take place in September and October.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are open to practicing Catholics sixteen years of age or older in good standing with the Church. The Pastor submits names to the Bishop who appoints persons to a three year term. Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist assist the Priests and Deacons with the distribution of Holy Communion. Three Eucharistic Ministers are assigned per mass during the weekend and one per weekday mass. Instruction will be provided prior to your first time.
This ministry meets the needs of the sick, elderly and other persons who are hospitalized, homebound, or in nursing home by providing Holy Communion, and prayer and caring hearts. Training is provided. Open to practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church. The Pastor submits names to the Bishop who in turns appoints persons to a three year term. This ministry is responsible for the artistic and liturgical needs of our public spaces of prayer which include the sanctuary area, chapel, and arts and environment corner. The busiest times are Christmas and Easter. Many women, men and children are needed. We enhance the liturgical seasons throughout the year with banners, flowers, and backdrops as needed. We meet as needed. Set-up in the church is usally late in the afternoons during the week or Saturday mornings. Contact Kathie Welte at 815-963-2910
This committee assists in preparing for masses and other liturgical celebrations throughout the year. it also coordinates various liturgical roles, such as Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Ushers, Arts and Environment, etc. All this is done according to the needs of the Pastor. We meet the 2nd Monday of the month from September through May.
Church Cleaners are volunteers who do light housekeeping of the church after the 8:00 a.m. Friday morning mass-dusting, vacuuming, cleaning pews, distribution of books, etc. They report to the Head Sacristan. Contact Carl Rossato at 815-968-5438.
